Motor vehicle accident patient with bleeding leg fracture, bruising on left torso, suspected neck injury, this is what Phase 3 Medical Students from the University of Wollongong were presented with last Wednesday. Luckily no one was hurt.
The above scenario is just one of the simulation activities run by Emergency Physician Dr Paul Fischer and Simulation Coordinator Pam Walmsley at the Murwillumbah Education Centre. Students work under simulated emergency conditions using a high-tech training mannequin and replica emergency equipment. Students have a short period of time to assess the patient and determine the best course of action. This team activity not only allows students to practice their clinical skills but communication and leadership.
The students are in their twelfth week of placement at Murwillumbah.
